STARGAZING

Un viaggio alla ricerca delle stelle

Vi è mai capitato di percorrere di notte le strade intorno a casa vostra, persi nei vostri pensieri,

e di sollevare la testa cercando le stelle senza però riuscire a vederle?

Oggi, per noi cittadini urbani, se è ovvio non sapere più distinguere chiaramente costellazioni, pianeti, galassie, il vero problema è che nemmeno riusciamo a vederle; rimaniamo infatti stupiti quando, nelle serate limpide in montagna o in qualche posto molto isolato e buio, riusciamo

a vedere bene il cielo e tutti i suoi astri e addirittura a orientarci grazie alla luce della Luna.

Perché nelle nostre città non è più possibile rimanere incantati sotto a un cielo stellato?

Se associamo una grande quantità di luci, tra lampioni, case, segnali stradali e insegne luminose, alle zone più densamente popolate, che hanno alta produttività e crescita demografica, sono questi i fattori che portano a un incremento dell’inquinamento e di conseguenza a un cielo opaco, senza stelle.

Have you ever crossed the streets around your house at night, lost in your thoughts, and raised your head looking for the stars without being able to see them?
Today, for us urban citizens, if it is obvious that we no longer know how to clearly distinguish constellations, planets, galaxies, the real problem is that we can not even see them; in fact, we remain amazed when, on clear evenings in the mountains or in some very isolated and dark places, we can see the sky and all its stars and even find our way around thanks to the light of the Moon.

Why is it that in our cities it is no longer possible to remain enchanted under a starry sky?
If we associate a large amount of lights, including street lights, houses, street signs and light signs, to the most densely populated areas, which have high productivity and demographic growth, these are the factors that lead to an increase in pollution and consequently to an opaque and starless sky.

Con questo libro illustrato, risultato del nostro progetto grafico e delle nostre ricerche, accompagniamo il lettore in un percorso: dalla celebre Black Marble, foto scattata dallo spazio

nel 2012, al tema dell’inquinamento luminoso, a cui oggi il nostro pianeta è particolarmente soggetto, dal turismo del buio ai viaggi spaziali, fino ad arrivare a ciò che ci ha ispirato: le stelle

e come possiamo tornare a vederle. Come introduzione a ogni capitolo, abbiamo scelto

di rappresentare sette costellazioni, ognuna delle quali è associata a un racconto della mitologia greca che in qualche modo si collega al contenuto del capitolo; e per quanto riguarda le immagini documentarie, abbiamo voluto dedicare loro un grande spazio, proprio per immergere il lettore

in un piccolo universo.

With this illustrated book, the result of our graphic design and research, we lead the reader through a path: from the famous Black Marble, picture that has been taken from space in 2012, to the topic of light pollution, which our planet is particularly subjected to, from the Dark-Sky tourism, up to what inspired us: the stars and how we can see them again.

As an introduction to each chapter, we have chosen to represent seven constellations, each of which is associated with a tale of Greek mythology that somehow connects to the content of the chapter; and as for the documentary images, we wanted to dedicate them a large space, just to immerse the reader in a small universe.
