Settlement Design of Sari Village: A concept

The aim of the settlement design project was to develop sustainable solutions for the current issues pertaining in the villages of Uttarakhand. It focused on community-based sustainable development that focused on the multi- dimensional aspect of sustainability; to understand the livelihood of the people and the impact such a concept can have on their living along with their local and global politics, philosophy as well as economy.
Sari Village, a small hamlet nestled in the arduous valley of Himalayas, was taken up as the site of intervention. The population of the village has been consistently decreasing with most of the males migrating, leaving only the womenfolk, elderly and children in the village. It also served as the base camp to a famous lake, Deoria Tal. The site provided many opportunities and areas of possible intervention.
The objective was to develop an understanding of an architect’s role in not just tangible aspects like building services and building construction but also in issues of livelihood, poverty, resource conservation, etc
