It is an autobiographical work, the author's memories of five years spent as a child in Corfu (Greece). On behalf of himself, Gerald Darrell is equally funny, colorful, and lovingly portrays

his troubled mother, his eccentric brothers, his teenage sister, his faithful accomplice the dog Roger, as well as birds, animals, and insects of all shapes and sizes that gradually populate the house. Gerald Darrell tells about them all with such love that this love and curiosity is passed on to the reader.
