3D Contemporary Abstract Sculpture

For my second piece, I was inspired by modern and contemporary movements in 3D-Art. Sculptures have always been a huge part of my childhood, as I grew up frequently touring museums such as the LACMA and the MOMA. My idea drew from contemporary sculpture artists such as Joe Ganero, who uses large, varying-sized holes to create negative space within his abstract sculpture. I was drawn to the idea of using loops, holes, and empty “tunnel-like” spaces in order to create flow and movement. Ganero utilizes the fluid form of his pieces to create a balance and a visual guide to the eye, something that I sought to emulate.

For my sculpture, I attempted to combine elements of human figure and anatomy with abstract shapes. My goal was to have the top of the sculpture appear as the torso of a posing woman, and then for the shape of the sculpture to devolve into abstractness as it continued downward. Unfortunately, I do not think I was completely accurate in my capturing of the pose, but since it is an abstract piece it can still be interpreted as wished. Though I was working in a 3D medium, I still tried to keep the line of the piece apparent. My sculpture came out a bit rough and choppy, as I intended to follow the molded, chiseled texture that I have observed in many sculptures. I also painted my sculpture in a brownish shade and glossed it with Mod-Podge, in order to emulate the presentation of sculpture that I saw in much of my research. Overall, I am not completely pleased with my piece, and feel that my original vision was somewhat unrealized, but I still greatly enjoyed working in a different medium and researching, studying, and emulating a different type of art than before.
