The focus of this project was to create a new visual direction for the 2019 cross country spike offering from the New Balance brand. The team specifically identified an opportunity to build a XC spike that catered to the new generation of runners, who prioritize elevated construction and materials alongside foundational performance.
The design began to gravitate towards updating the race-ready NB logo to be located on the vamp, a first for the brand's XC category.
The internals for the spike were a large focus from the start of the design process in order to ensure a proper, comfortable fit. We wanted to create a seamless fit in the collar, which we achieved by wrapping the knit textile around the foot, removing potential irritation points around the very sensitive ankle area.
