Avant Garde : MAASAI SHUKA - Flat Knit

4 years into fashion college I’ve learnt that art is everywhere, it’s just the way you get inspired. The African culture got me interested about the tribes in the continent. Kenya is an iconic African safari destination and home to the Maasai tribe. They are the best known local populations internationally due to their residential location, unique culture, their distinctive customs and tribal attire. Maasai means people speaking the mai language.

The entire collection in made on traditional hand flat knitting machine. We have also explored with unconventional waste materials likes keys, cardboards, wires, wooden stick, hay etc. Surface embellishments techniques are done with threads, feathers, seed beads, pearls and chains for a statement look inspired by the Maasai tribe.

Our collection hopefully gives justice as the elements are inspired from the minute detail and magnificent culture of the Maasai tribes.
