I have no interest in football so decided to explore the project from a number of different vantage points. The main areas I investigated were: mediated experiences (i.e. watching the game on television); the use of conflict minerals that are largely mined in the Congo and used in the production of televisions and other digital devices; and gender (football being dominantly understood and presented as a male pursuit). As a result I began to work with a chant from the Democratic Republic of Congo women’s national football team, “ALLEZ-Y LES LEOPARDESSES”.
The design was also influenced by research into blindness and how the dreams of blind people involve other sensory qualities, such as touch rather than vision. For example, for some blind people, dreams involve surfaces in which smoothness is a often a pleasant attribute while rough textures were more nightmarish.
