Illustrating Art Movements

An interesting illustration project done as a classroom assignment at NIFT; the objective of the project was to understand design elements and various art movements and apply the interpretation to any natural form (flora / fauna).

The defining features of notable art movements such as Cubism, Bauhaus, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Optical Art, De Stijl, Post-Impressionism, etc were thoroughly studied. The idea was to imbibe the essence of a particular style in our illustration, without directly recreating any piece of art.

The chosen natural forms - chameleon, raspberry fruit, apple blossom and birds of paradise - were first sketched in a realistic manner to understand the form. They were then made in the style of three art movements, keeping in mind the look and feel of that particular movement. Various tools such as colour pencil, charcoal, pen and ink as well as watercolours were used to create the following illustrations.
