Visual Communication Magazine

Create a piece of editorial design that highlights a specific interest, caters for a gap or competition in the magazine market place. This direction and content was chosen to rival the UK's 'Eye' magazine and the USA's 'PRINT' magazine. The concept of the piece was to inform designers of information and form connected with, but not strictly contained within the world of visual communication.  It would seek to show new ways of communication in the form of contemporary and the unseen and would try to jump away from any commercially driven design content.

Eye has always been one of my favourite magazines.  I loved the covers. They are simplistic and yet stylish without typographic element.  I wanted to take this concept and drive it on.  This first issue relates to the main content of "Information Under the Radar" and focuses on New York.  This is highlighted by the use of semiotic shapes to show radar and city on the front cover and is backed up by the use of Panatone 116 of the New York Yellow Cab Company.  Articles included an interview with Pentagrams senior partner Michael Beruit, an article of New York City and its design culture.  Photo journalism of New York Yellow Cabs and an info graphic on human migration within the city.
