Visual Experiments for the Curious
The Project was to make an artists book.
Since I need to loosen up as an artist and person as well, I got the idea to do all sorts of experiments. The fact that it doesn't have empty pages helped me to just mess around. Each page or every other page has something.
When I started, I was curious of the process and where it would lead. At the end I used this space to scribble in.
The title was inspired by the book's original title: Language first Aid for Tourists (word for word translation from Hungarian)
Materials & mediums: sewing, pasting, drawing, illustrations, pop-up pages and more
I still wanted to keep some of the original cover, instead of covering it.
The name of the project was inspired by the book's original title: 'Linguistic First Aid for Tourists' (in Hungarian: Nyelvi elsősegély turistáknak) -> Visual Experiments for the Curious (in Hungarian: Vizuális kísérletek kíváncsiaknak)
I started out sewing straight lines. I actually tried to make it nice, but realized I can't fix it and accepted the loops.
I tore out part of the next page and scribbled behind the sewn pocket, just to see what it would look like.
I was getting tired and frusturated at the end of the day and stabbed holes with a needle.
The page on the left is a pocket filled with paper strips, which is two pages sewn together.
The other page was drenched and dried a couple times.
I cut two pages into 1cm strips and reassembled them but mixed up: one by sewing and the other by taping.
Here I experimented with different ways of sewing and tearing with some materials peeking through.
This cardboard insert has some more sewing experiments.
Grommets and sewing experiment
Big holes and small holes. The question is: Will the pink go all the way through?
Yes! The arrow is pointing at the only small pink dot.
Here I cut the paper and drew over the cracks with ink, wich made an interesting result I did not expect.
Learning from the first try, I punched my holes in the same place.
Later on I used some of these punched circles.
I stamped the top and edge of a stamping pad. I liked the grainy fine texture it made.
On several pages I tried making an abstract illustration that expressed Christmas.
Abstract illustrations from my photos. About here I realized how great marker and pencil work together.
I played around with dripping ink and then let it drip on the pages.
Pop-up garden experiment
A growing worm
The last couple pages are wood scenes made with different color palettes. Someone is peeking their googly eyes through...
On the back of the book I covered the publisher with my own name.
Thank you for looking at my experiments! :)
