The annual World Economic Forum’s Summit on the Global Agenda brings together 72 international topical councils to address critical world issues. In conjunction with the 2010 Summit, Visualizing.org challenged the public to design an information graphic that shows the interconnectedness of these issues. Working together in a team of 5, we submitted “Catalyzing the Global Dialogue,” which became the competition's winning entry and earned the privilege of being displayed at the Summit.
Given a data set of survey results from conference attendees about which councils they would like to meet with and why, design a visualization that presents this information in a compelling way.
The name of the data set is the "2010 Global Agenda Interlinkage Survey," so above all we sought to show connections between the 72 topical councils.
The beginning state of the visualization shows all 72 topics arrayed in a ring. Connecting lines in the center indicate councils which are strongly related.
Hovering over a topic highlights it and connects it to the topics which were most related in the survey. The differently sized bubbles around the edge show the popularity of each topic, relative to the others.
Clicking on a topical council at the edge transforms the circle, displaying additional information on who would like to speak to the council and vice versa. A mutual interest to speak is indicated with white double-ended arrows. The center of the circle also shows the selected council's membership by country and organization type.
Finally, hovering over a speech bubble icon shows any comments about why the two councils should meet.
The entire visualzation was conceived, designed, and programmed in a single weekend, over a span of 36 adrenaline-fuelled hours. Our process consisted of a lot of fast whiteboarding, data-crunching in spreadsheets, and not sleeping much... but the end result was worth every drop of coffee.
