For may years people have chased after the mystical chalice in one form or another, in computer games , in movies , books and also in real life.

Here it is eventually I found it …. not really I did create it though.

The chalice was sprayed with methylated spirit and ammonium dichromate was spooned into it, as the ammonium ignited it created the effect seen coming from the chalice, the lighting on the pentagram and along the stem of the chalice was done with torches.

 

Still with plenty to accomplish in life this work represents my fear of the rapid passing of time and the fact that I, as we all, can do nothing but submit to its never-ending power, its constant “Tic Toc Tic Toc” as the sands continue to pass relentlessly and unstoppable and watch as it passes by at ever increasing speeds.

The moments left to achieve our goals ebbing away with the tides of time.

The sand timer was sprayed with methylated spirit and ignited and the lighting was a selection of carefully placed torches.

 

During the Inquisition, The Church lapsed into a long period of torture and conducted itself in the most heinous fashion. More people were killed for being label pagan or witch that died during the Holocaust. During this time the pentagram was seen a Goat’s Head or the Devil in the form of Baphomet. It was Baphomet whom the Inquisition accused the Templars of worshiping. And their order was disbanded. Many Knights of the order refused to give up their beliefs, opting to meet in secret and hide their knowledge from the public. A custom that is still practiced today.

In the bull run conducted annually in Spain the bulls are complete with their horns, anyone getting caught by these horns can suffer greatly as the horns inflict burning pain on their victim or even death.

In this piece the burning cow horns are representative of pain and the darkness surrounding our moo is representing the worst possible outcome … death.

No cows were harmed during this photo shoot but my ornament got a little singed !

How oh how can I put them out to allow my heart to beat again.

The light bulb in this piece was squirted with Methylated spirit and ignited.

People born during the year of the Fire Horse are notorious for being bad luck. People born during a Fire Horse years are said to be irresponsible, rebellious, and overall bad news.

And for some reason, women are said to be especially dangerous Fire Horses. They supposedly sap their family’s finances, neglect their children, and drive their father and husband to an early grave.

This myth is so powerful that it seriously affects how people behave. Men might avoid marrying a Fire Horse, and families avoid giving birth to Fire Horse children.

In 1966, the year of the Fire Horse, people in Japan (and elsewhere in Asia) really, really tried not to have kids, either because they thought that the Fire Horse myth was true, or because they were worried that others would treat their kids differently because of the Fire Horse myth. Japanese people practised birth control, and used abortion all in an effort to not have children during the year of the Fire Horse.

A phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit with a colourful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again.

Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus. The main story told about Icarus and his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. He ignored instructions not to fly too close to the sun, and the melting wax caused him to fall into the sea where he drowned.

The fate of Icarus has also drawn attention as an example of human folly or bravado. Icarus would not accept reasonable limits. He went too far, flying beyond the bounds that had been set. As a result, he met with disaster.

In this piece the apple is enveloped with the mystical magics of time, death, immortality and most of all temptation. 
Apples…
The apple is a very rich symbol. Temptation is the first one that springs to mind. A very rich, and very old, image is that of a skeleton holding an apple: the temptations/sins that lead to death.
It is also said that the apple is symbolic of immortality and reincarnation and it represents the cycle of life, death and rebirth.

THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS was a contest between the three most beautiful goddesses of Olympus—Aphrodite, Hera and Athena—for the prize of a golden apple addressed to “the fairest”

The story begins at the Wedding of Peleus and Thetis to which all of the gods were invited, all except Eris, the goddess of discord. When she appeared at the festivities, she was turned away, and in her anger cast a golden apple amongst the assembled goddesses addressed “To the Fairest.” Three goddesses laid claim to the apple—Aphrodite, Hera and Athena. Zeus was asked to mediate and he commanded Hermes to lead the three goddesses to Paris of Troy to decide the issue. The three goddesses appearing before the shepherd prince, each offering him gifts for favour. He chose Aphrodite, swayed by her promise to bestow upon him Helene, the most beautiful woman, for wife. The subsequent abduction of Helene led directly to the Trojan War and the fall of the city.

The clear chess piece was selected to look like ice and a light was shone through from the side, the piece was then squirted with Methylated spirit and ignited.

No photo editing except for colour and contrast levels.

 

The metaphor of a rose the flower most associated with love starting to burn is that of the end of love and as it ends burning with all the pain of fire unable to extinguish until everything is gone.

Thanatos (Death) is the twin brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep. He is typically shown with his brother, and is usually considered to be gentle. His job in the mystic realm is to escort the deceased to the god of the underworld, Hades. Once in Hades’ kingdom, Thanatos (Death) hands the dead over to Charon, a skeletal body, black cloaked being awaiting the delivery).

The crucifix burns, the crucifix burns and the crucifix bleeds
This symbol and that which it represents is responsible for many wars throughout history wars that bring bloodshed death and destruction this is represented by the fire and the blood running from the centre cross.
The symbol and that which it represents is also responsible for salvation and the calming of peoples hearts and minds this is represented by the water dousing the flames.

Baphomet is a demonic figure that appears in occult and folkloric traditions – although often confused with Satan this entity is technically a different demon altogether and is widely believed to be an invention of medieval scholars: however their attempts to demonise him may of worked a little too well as Baphomet has been adopted by a few societies of the Left-Hand Path as a patron figure.
Baphomet is, according to legend, a goat-headed fertility-spirit (or demon) that was worshipped by practitioners of the occult – although there was little evidence of this actually occuring until later in history: he was also supposedly the secret benefactor of the Knight Templars during the height of the persecution against the Order (which was later renounced by the Catholic Church as unjust and the order cleared of all wrongdoing).
Despite this, Baphomet became popular amongst those who opposed orthodox religion or order and became a patron of many different Left-Hand faiths, amongst them theistic Satanism – he was seen as either a symbol or a literal being depending on the beliefs of the cult and could vary in function.

In the beginning there was no fire and the earth was cold. Then the Thunderbirds sent their lightning to a sycamore tree on an island where the Weasels lived. The Weasels were the only ones who had fire and they would not give any of it away.
The people knew that there was fire on the island because they could see smoke coming from the sycamore, but the water was too deep for anyone to cross. When winter came the people suffered so much from the cold that they called a council to find some way of obtaining fire from the Weasels. They invited all the animals who could swim.

“How shall we obtain fire?” the people asked.

Most of the animals were afraid of the Weasels because they were bloodthirsty and ate mice and moles and fish and birds. Rabbit was the only one who was brave enough to try to steal fire from them. “I can run and swim faster than the Weasels,” he said. “I am also a good dancer. Every night the Weasels build a big fire and dance around it. Tonight I will swim across and join in the dancing. I will run away with some fire.”

He considered the matter for a while and then decided how he would do it. Before the sun set he rubbed his head with pine tar so as to make his hair stand up. Then, as darkness was falling, he swam across to the island.

The Weasels received Rabbit gladly because they had heard of his fame as a dancer. Soon they had a big fire blazing and all began dancing around it. As the Weasels danced, they approached nearer and nearer the fire in the centre of the circle. They would bow to the fire and then dance backwards away from it.

When Rabbit entered the dancing circle, the Weasels shouted to him: “Lead us, Rabbit!” He danced ahead of them, coming closer and closer to the fire. He bowed to the fire, bringing his head lower and lower as if he were going to take hold of it. While the Weasels were dancing faster and faster, trying to keep up with him, Rabbit suddenly bowed very low so that the pine tar in his hair caught fire in a flash of flame.

He ran off with his head ablaze, and the angry Weasels pursued him, crying, “Catch him! Catch him! He has stolen our sacred fire! Catch him, and throw him down!”

But Rabbit outran them and plunged into the water, leaving the Weasels on the shore. He swam across the water with the flames still blazing from his hair.
The Weasels now called on the Thunderbirds to make it rain so as to extinguish the fire stolen by Rabbit. For three days rain poured down upon the earth, and the Weasels were sure that no fire was left burning except in their sycamore tree.
Rabbit, however, had built a fire in a hollow tree, and when the rain stopped and the sun shone, he came out and gave fire to all the people. After that whenever it rained, they kept fires in their shelters, and that is how Rabbit brought fire to the people.

This art work was created using a Pocket watch, oven tray (black) and a bottle of Metholated spirits.

The camera was set up on a tripod and the oven tray was placed on a non combustible object and both were placed on the floor away from any other combustible objects ie the house! I then practiced the idea trying different shutter speeds and apertures until the approximate level of correctness was reached so then I knew only small tweaks would be required during the actual shoot.
I then applied about an eggcup full of Metholated spirit on and around the pocket watch put my camera into remote mode and light the Metholated spirit with a long reach triggered oven lighter, at this point i hit the button on my remote to get the desired image seen here.

Scared by the solitude and the darkness that the night brings with nothing but seemimgly empty streets and strange noises of the night for company, not knowing which way to turn our modern day princess seeks comfort in the light that calls from the gloom, a tiny shimmering beacon of hope from the dark.

This lovely image was taken with a Nikon D90 and a Sigma 10-20mm at 20mm 
at f19 for 3 seconds my model was required to stay still.

Father time or Kronus/Chronus as known in Greek mythology is the personification of time itself, It was foretold that one of times children would one day take his place, consumed with envy time consumed every child that was born unto him except for one which was hidden from him.

Image taken with a Nikon D90 using a Sigma 150 f2.8 macro lens the lighting was a single Bowens studio light ( Bodegon paintings would only ever have a single lighting source) with a black background I also used a 09 ND filter to further blacken the background area.

This image also has a personal metaphorical meaning for me with the use of the pocket watch wrapped in the skin of a lemon.
The time on the watch was the time I was born, with each pip symbolising notable events within my life, events that leave a bitter feeling the pips further symbolising the growth of the new from these bitter experiences and how it shapes us as people.

This piece of work was my first piece to be presented in a gallery and was part of two pieces of work which went together in the presentation.

In this time period fruit and veg was hung up in the pantry to stop it from going bad so quickly so many still life paintings of this period would have hanging vegetables and fruit in them.

The bloodshed that time brings to our society is seen throughout history, countless wars, terrorism and hatred being part of times terrible reflection.
The puddle of times blood in which our nemesis is reflected is minuscule compared to the reality of suffering through history.

Jinn is an Arabic word which origin is the qur’an, Jinn’s are super natural creatures, according to the Qur’an, Jinns are one of the creations of Allah, along with Angels and Humans only two creatures which have free will, the Jinns and the humans, meaning that like humans Jinns can be good, evil or neutrally benevolent.

So where can you find Jinn’s and how do they live?

Interesting point and the answer is more interesting, Listen well Jinn’s are living all around us, in this world, living in our houses, our streets, our countries having their own religions (Muslims,Christians,Jews and many other) and living their life just like we do.

As for their physical origin, the prophet said: “The Angels were created from light and the Jinn from smokeless fire”. It is this description of the Jinn which tells us so much about them. Because they were created from fire, their nature has generally been fiery and thus their relationship with man has been built upon this.

The ability to possess and take over the minds and bodies of other creatures is also a power which the Jinn have utilised greatly over the centuries. This however, is something which has been prohibited to them as it is a great oppression to possess another being.

Jinn’s have possesed people for many reasons. Sometimes it is because the Jinn or its family has been hurt accidentally. It could be because the Jinn has fallen in love with the person. However, most of the time possession occurs because the Jinn is simply malicious and wicked.

In a world where many faiths are at loggerheads, the stubbornness of those that grip so tightly to their beliefs and refuse to accept any progression within humanity begin to burn with hatred, in any faith there are pure fanatics.

A mythical weapon from the depths of hell’s Armoury that is said to be able to destroy souls and mystical beings and has immense destructive power.

If a firearm is not correctly maintained or the bearer is just unlucky it is possible it could misfire, backfire, or even explode in the bearer’s hand, the awesome power that was intended for its victim destroying or ending the life of its wielder.

The inverted pentacle with a goat’s head is called the Sigil (or Sigl) of Baphomet. The second word may have come from two Greek words, baphe and metis, meaning “absorption of knowledge.” It has also been called the Black Goat, Devil’s Goat, Goat Head, Goat of Mendes, and Judas Goat. Its first appearance appears to have been during the vicious interrogation of members of the Knights Templar by the Roman Catholic Church during the Inquisition. There was little consensus among different victims’ descriptions of the Baphomet. It can probably be safely assumed that their description of the Baphomet is more a product of the Inquisition’s torture methods than of any actual statue that was in use by the Knights.

Today, the Baphomet is widely used by religious Satanists. The Church of Satan also uses a second symbol which is an infinity sign (a figure 8 on its side).

A flaming sword is a sword glowing with flame by some supernatural power. Flaming swords have existed in legend and myth for thousands of years. According to the Bible, a Cherub with a flaming sword was placed by God at the gates of Paradise after Adam and Eve were banished from it (Genesis 3:24).

Eastern Orthodox of Christianity tradition says that from the time Jesus was born, the flaming sword was removed from the Garden of Eden, making it possible for humanity to re-enter Paradise.

A reversed pentagram, with two points projecting upwards, is a symbol of evil and attracts sinister forces because it overturns the proper order of things and demonstrates the triumph of matter over spirit. It is the goat of lust attacking the heavens with its horns, a sign execrated by initiates.

The flaming star (which we see in my work here) , which, when turned upside down, is the hieroglyphic sign of the goat of Black Magic, whose head may be drawn in the star, the two horns at the top, the ears to the right and left, the beard at the bottom. It is the sign of antagonism and fatality.
It is the goat of lust attacking the heavens with its horns.

Abaddon was one of the first demons to fall, and was handpicked by Lucifer himself to become one of the Knights of Hell. Abaddon is possibly the last surviving member of the Knights, as the archangels were thought to have killed them all. She is the reason why the Men of Letters are disbanded and destroyed. Larry Ganem, the last survivor of the Men of Letters, described her as a “hired gun,” but did not say who was in control of her.

The Ferryman stands silently in the darkness for the next soul to pay his toll.

KHARON (or Charon) was the ferryman of the dead, an underworld spirit in the service of King Haides. He received the shades of the dead from Hermes, who gathered them from the upper world and guided them to the shores of the Akherousian mere. From there Kharon transported them in his skiff to a final resting place in Hades, the land of the dead, on the other side.

The fee for his service was a single coin which was placed in the mouth of the corpse at burial. Those who had not received due burial and were unable to pay his fee, would be left to wander the earth, haunting the upper world as ghosts.

 

Shiva

One of the most recognized and ubiquitous symbols of Lord Shiva is the trishula, the trident. It is fairly common, in Shaivite iconography, to have anthropomorphic forms of Shiva represented with trishula in hand. It is also not uncommon to see the trishula alongside Shiva’s aniconic (Linga) form. On rare occasions, one even finds the trishula is Shiva’s very representation in the absence of any other. The trishula is such a powerful symbol of the Lord that when one sees the trishula, one thinks of Shiva.

About Lord Shiva

Along with Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the protector, Shiva makes up one third of the trinity of Hindu gods. Shiva is the destroyer and regenerator, and is one of the oldest gods of India. There have been images of Shiva found in India, which date back as far as 2500 BC.

Shiva is destroyed creation after every Kalpa, while simultaneously becoming the great ascetic, preserving the world with his meditation. In fact, Shiva is often called the Destroyer, though it is more accurate to consider him the God of Transformation, as his associations are mostly tied to the creation spawned from destruction, rather than the destruction itself.

Demons of the Heart

When one heart burns with fire and desire and one burns cold the incompatibility of this contradiction causes immense pain to the bearer of the one that still burns bright.

This contradiction within the soul causes such anguish that it can cause demons within to manifest in many, these demons are capable of leading their bearers to lash out in many different ways or even inwards back upon themselves.

Firestarter (A Page from the Book of Shadows)

The Book of Shadows
The Book of Shadows is a book containing religious texts and instructions for magical rituals found within the Neopagan religion of Wicca. Originating within the Gardnerian tradition of the Craft. 
The concept of the Book of Shadows was then adopted by other Wiccan traditions, such as Alexandrianism and Mohsianism, and with the rise of books teaching people how to begin following Wicca in the 1970s onward, the idea of the Book of Shadows was then further propagated amongst solitary practitioners unconnected to earlier traditions.

The creation of the spell scrolls

These actually took days to make I needed to create a few different ones with different designs to them as I was unsure what would look best when shoot.
The designs were printed out and then a large amount of tea was drunk to supply the tea bags that I used to age the paper once this was done and the paper was dry I then set about burning the edges away trying desperately not to completely set fire to either the scroll , me or anything else for that matter! I then used fake blood to create a more sombre element I used my hand and a pentacle….

Samhain

The festival observed at this time was called Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween). It was the biggest and most significant holiday of the Celtic year. The Celts believed that at the time of Samhain, more so than any other time of the year, the ghosts of the dead were able to mingle with the living, because at Samhain the souls of those who had died during the year travelled into the otherworld. People gathered to sacrifice animals, fruits, and vegetables. They also lit bonfires in honour of the dead, to aid them on their journey, and to keep them away from the living. On that day all manner of beings were abroad: ghosts, fairies, and demons—all part of the dark and dread.

How Samhain Became Halloween

Samhain became the Halloween we are familiar with when Christian missionaries attempted to change the religious practices of the Celtic people. In the early centuries of the first millennium A.D., before missionaries such as St. Patrick and St. Columcille converted them to Christianity, the Celts practised an elaborate religion through their priestly caste, the Druids, who were priests, poets, scientists and scholars all at once. As religious leaders, ritual specialists, and bearers of learning, the Druids were not unlike the very missionaries and monks who were to Christianize their people and brand them evil devil worshippers.

Spider Demon

The Spider Demon was a demonic being who would remain in her lair for a hundred years, after which she would emerge from her cave and feed on the magic of the most powerful living being she could detect. 
She would preserve her victims in a cocoon of webs until she was hungry enough to drain their powers, and their life.

Stingy Jack

The Legend of “Stingy Jack”
People have been making jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack.” According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree’s bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.

Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavoury figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a ember of hellfire to light his way. Jack put the ember into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’Lantern.”

Today many people use Pumpkins.

Halloween has its origins in pagan festivals held around the end of October in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. People believed that, at this time of year, the spirits of dead people could come ‘alive’ and walk among the living. They thought that it was important to dress up in costumes when venturing outside, to avoid being harmed by the spirits. This may be the origin of the Halloween costumes seen today. In Puritan times, Halloween celebrations were outlawed, but they were revived in later times.

Suicide, the Demon of inner torment

When experiencing unbearable inner torment, suicide appears to be the only way to escape the agony inflicted by the souls destruction. 
But it is the ones left behind who find themselves wondering about their decisions, and what more they could have done if anything to make a difference.

Though you may think this demon is dead it has the ability to become re borne and the again torment the soul with great agony of self torture and destruction.

Fire Demon of Muspelheim

Muspelheim was created far to the south of the world. Muspelheim was a burning hot place, filled with lava, flames, sparks and soot. Muspelheim was the home the of fire giants, fire demons and ruled by the giant Surt. He was a sworn enemy of the Aesir. 
Surt will ride out with his flaming sword in his hand at Ragnarok “the end of the world” Surt will then attack Asgard, “the home of the gods” and turn it into a flaming inferno.

Darkness of the Black Dog

‘Black dog’ is a powerfully expressive metaphor that appears to require no explanation. The combination of ‘blackness’ with the negative connotations of ‘dog’, noun and verb, seems an eminently apt description of depression
an ever-present companion, lurking in the shadows just out of sight, growling, vaguely menacing, always on the alert; sinister and unpredictable, capable of overwhelming you at any moment

The fact that there is very little of me showing in this image only just peeking from the darkness the lord of this dark oppressive realm, is a metaphoric realisation of the feeling of depression.

The Bat's Lost Feather

Taino and Arawak myth

When time was yet in the cradle, there was no uglier creature in the world than the bat.

The bat went up to heaven to look for God. He didn't say, "I'm bored with being hideous. Give me coloured feathers." No. He said, "Please give me feathers, I'm dying of cold."

But God had not a single feather left over.

"Each bird will give you a feather," he decided.

Thus the bat got the white feather of the dove and the green one of the parrot, the iridescent one of the hummingbird, the pink one of the flamingo, the red of the cardinal's tuft and the blue of the kingfisher's back, the clayey one of the eagle's wing, and the sun feather that burns in the breast of the toucan.

The bat, luxuriant with colours and softness, moved between earth and clouds. Wherever he went, the air became pleasant and the birds dumb with admiration. According to the Zapotec peoples, the rainbow was born of the echo of his flight.

Vanity puffed out his chest. He acquired a disdainful look and made insulting remarks.

The birds called a meeting. Together they flew up to God. "The bat makes fun of us," they complained. "And what's more, we feel cold for lack of the feathers he took."

Next day, when the bat shook his feathers in full flight, he suddenly became naked. A rain of feathers fell to earth.

He is still searching for them. Blind and ugly, enemy of the light, he lives hidden in caves. He goes out in pursuit of the lost feathers after night has fallen and flies very fast, never stopping because it shames him to be seen.

Who are the Taino ,Arawak
Arawak, American Indians of the Greater Antilles and South America. The Taino, an Arawak subgroup, were the first native peoples encountered by Christopher Columbus on Hispaniola. The island Arawak were virtually wiped out by Old World diseases to which they had no immunity. A small number of mainland Arawak survive in South America. Most (more than 15,000) live in Guyana, where they represent about one-third of the Indian population.

Will o' the Wisp

will o' the wisp (Medieval Latin: "foolish fire") can be found in numerous folk tales around the United Kingdom, and is often a malicious character in the stories.
In Welsh folklore, it is said that the light is "fairy fire" held in the hand of a púca, or pwca, a small goblin-like fairy that mischievously leads lone travellers off the beaten path at night. As the traveller follows the púca through the marsh or bog, the fire is extinguished, leaving them lost.

The cotton ball was wrapped tightly and wired shut using 100% cotton thread, t he reason for this is that it burns without melting so you can hold it without getting hurt ( well for a little while, still gets pretty warm)
