Title: Boxed Perception

Medium: Oil paints on canvas sheet, red silk cloth (3 feet).
Size: 99 x 69 cm (with frame)

Rationale:
Inspired by the story of Draupadi from the Indian Mythology, Mahabharata, I have depicted the disrespect women face in today’s world. I have kept the nude figure in greyscale and emphasised the ‘Saree’- a type of Indian clothing - and the dripping blood with bright red to convey vindictiveness. The ‘Saree’ is placed behind the figure, through the frame and stretches out to the wall. Her hair is long and tied up in a loose bun drenched with blood as an allegory to the character of Draupadi.
Title: Boxed Perception

I wanted the viewers to gradually realise that they tend to look at only what is inside the frame, alluding to a narrow-minded society. With their limited perspective they only focus on the nude figure, and completely disregard the women's ‘Saree’ (a piece of Indian clothing) that symbolises her dignity.
