Ghetto Aesthetic: A Visual Love Letter

GHETTO AESTHETIC

I applied to the Adobe Creative Residency Community fund and was chosen to receive a grant to do a personal project of my choosing. This project is titled “Ghetto Aesthetic”. It’s a celebration of 90’s eccentric black style inspired by the idea that black culture is “ghetto until proven fashionable.” This is a continuation of a common theme in my work, which surrounds me being a black woman choosing to own the narrative and place black women in spaces of authentic regality.

“GHETTO AESTHETIC” is meant to encourage you to stop, pause, and reflect on the immediate biases you might feel in association to “Ghetto” black style. Why is it seen as ghetto rather than “Avant Garde”? Why do fashion corporations get to take these styles, put a $40,000 gown on it, and call it “next level fashion”?
I utilized Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Fresco for this project. Adobe Fresco was huge for my prep work which includes mood boards, notes, and idea sketches. Adobe Lightroom is the essential editing tool for my photos, and Photoshop comes into play with my retouching and and GIF creations.
You can check the complete project out on my site here!
