Eid Al-Adha in Rosetta

Eid al-Adha
in Rosetta
Rosetta is a port city of the Nile Delta, located 65 km (40 mi) east of Alexandria, in Egypt's Beheira governorate.
Founded around the 9th century, Rosetta boomed with the decline of Alexandria following the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517, only to wane in importance after Alexandria's revival.
During the 19th century, it was a popular British tourist destination, known for its charming Ottoman mansions, citrus groves and comparative cleanliness.

Eid al-Adha also called the "Festival of the Sacrifice", is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year. It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to  God's  command. But, before Abraham could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this intervention, an animal is sacrificed ritually and divided into three parts. One share is given to the poor and needy, another is kept for home, and the third is given to relatives.
Men, women, and children are expected to dress in their finest clothing to perform Eid prayer in a large congregation in an open waqf ("stopping") field called “Eidgah” or mosque.

Devotees offer the Eid al-Adha prayers at the mosque. Eid al-Adha prayer is performed any time after the sun completely rises up on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah. Also, Eid prayers must be offered in congregation.
At the conclusion of the prayers and sermon, Muslims embrace and exchange greetings with one another, give gifts and visit one another. Children receive “Eidyah”, which is customary from their grown-up relatives that are given in the form of a small sum of money. The customary greeting on Eid al-Fitr is "eid Mubarak!" which means "blessed Eid!”

One of the very important ritual specially in Rosetta (And many other Coastal Cities  in Egypt) is jumping and swimming in the Nile river on the first day of the feast just before Al-Eid prayer.

Hours later after the prayer every family member has to gather and witness the slaughter to fulfill his Sacrifice ritual. Affluent Muslims who can afford it sacrifice their best halal domestic animals (usually a cow, but can also be a camel, goat, sheep, or ram depending on the region).
