I'm Here Awareness Campaign

I think this is one of the most compelling projects I have ever been a part of.  This is the I'm Here campaign that was developed for a gallery and open space setting. The project took me down a path where I met many incredible individuals who opened up with their stories and experiences.

Each person has a disability, some visible, some invisible. I spent time with them all, hearing what they had to say in an attempt to create an artwork that told their story and shared their message. Each person had a graphic made for them using their own story that I recorded with them and typed out. The posters are made of them and made out of the stories they shared with me. The only way to truly get to know who they are, is to approach the artwork so that their story becomes clear.

Some of the stories were very hard to hear ranging from struggles as a young teenager with autism to coping and living with cerebral palsy. At times this was a difficult project to do but meeting everyone along the way was fantastic.

The goal was to share with the public that despite having a disability, they are all people too and we don't need to tip-toe around them. We should engage with them, speak with them and not feel uncomfortable about acknowledging them in public.

It was clear that there was a strong societal issue where my research showed many people felt uncomfortable and unsure on what to do/say when having an exchange with someone with a disability.

In the gallery, the some of the prints were on display and rotated daily to show a different person. They were complimented by nameless audio recordings of the conversations I had with them.

This was completed in my final year of university as one of my final projects.
