Type Design (Fall 2010)
Type Design (Fall 2010)
The goal of this project was to design a typeface from scratch and learn what it takes to be a type designer.
The focus was on specific characteristics of letterforms, and all letterforms must appear to be from one family. I was heavily influenced by a photo of a typeface on top of a grid in class. Because of this, I decided to use a grid with circles incorporated in it to design my typeface. Problems arose, particularly when I wanted to bring a vertical line straight down the middle of my grid. My grid was 12x12, making it difficult to maintain the same width, yet bring a line straight down the middle. The circular shape gave the typeface a unique look, putting each letter into the family via similar characteristics.
