In 2019, the celebration of the Spanish GP coincided with the 25th anniversary of the death of Ayrton Senna. Circuit de Catalunya challenged us to honor the memory of the best driver in the history of F1. Ayrton Senna passed away on May 1, 1994 in Imola in what was considered the most tragic weekend in F1. After the accident they found an Austrian flag in his pocket.He wanted to pay tribute to Roland Ratzenberger, a driver and friend who had passed away the day before on that same circuit during qualifying tests. And what better way to honor him than fulfilling his last wish: to wave the Austrian flag on the podium and honor the memory of his friend Roland.
A half and half Austrian Brasilian flag was created. Fans and drivers filled the circuit with flags and we achieved the most massive tribute in the world. The flag flew atop the podium at the end of the race.
