Below the Surface: An Exploration of Process

The Project
When artist and professor Leslie Lloyd reached out to me to assist in marketing an upcoming art exhibit on the CSU Channel Islands Campus, the event was only a thought in Leslie's brilliant and curious mind. The exhibit would become a feature of five amazing artists and the processes of how they make art.

First Drafts
Not knowing what exactly the tone of the event would be, I drafted two ideas. One that evoked the spirit of informative and approachable museum exhibit marketing; and one that fell inline with the theme of the show using cut out vellum to reveal the featured artwork 'below the surface' paired with more traditional and formal type.

Progression to the Final Draft
It was a joy and a great learning experience to work alongside Leslie to get this show up and running. Between tons of emails and a handful of in-person meetings, we made continuous steps towards the final poster (far right).
Adapting the Poster
In creating marketing materials (plural)...you always have to keep the idea of modularity in the back of your mind. I like to first work on the more complex or information-heavy piece (ie. this poster) and dial it in before creating the other pieces of the marketing puzzle (ie. other print sizes and social media graphics).
Above: Print Sizes 18" x 24", 11" x 17", and 8.5". x 11"
Above: Digital materials 1080px x 1080px for social media and 16:9 for tv screens
Into the Exhibit
Half-way into the project, we decided it would be fun to include the process behind the marketing materials in the show. I included my notes and questions from our meetings, some of our back and forth emails, and the evolution described above.
