Nikkei Maru is a tribute to Japanese immigration done typographically. The project started from a collection of photographs of the ships that brought Japanese immigrants to the American continent, and from our interest in researching the history of immigration, fueled by our own ancestry. In addition to the intercontinental transit, the research also addresses the arrival and establishment of Nikkei – Japanese living abroad and their descendants – on the new continent. The immigration process inspired other aspects of typography, such as newspapers from the Nikkei communities that were a reference for the lower case, and different experiences lived by immigrants who are represented by dingbats.

Nikkei Maru é uma homenagem à imigração japonesa feita de forma tipográfica. O projeto se iniciou a partir de uma coletânea de fotografias dos navios que trouxeram os imigrantes japoneses para o continente americano, e do nosso interesse em pesquisar sobre a história da imigração, alimentada pela nossa própria ancestralidade. Além do trânsito intercontinental, a pesquisa também aborda a chegada e estabelecimento de nikkeis – japoneses vivendo fora do país e seus descendentes – no novo continente. O processo imigratório inspirou outros aspectos na tipografia, como os jornais das comunidades nikkeis que foram referência para a caixa baixa, e diferentes experiências vividas pelos imigrantes que são representadas por dingbats.

In the Nikkei Maru typeface, the upper case was inspired by the paintings of the names of the ships that brought Japanese immigrants to the American continent, and represents the beginning of the immigration process. There was a typographic identity on these ships, whose names were painted in Latin in the grotesque style, without a serif and in all caps, with a slight geometry from the tool and the manual painting.
Na tipografia Nikkei Maru, a caixa alta foi inspirada nas pinturas dos nomes dos navios que trouxeram os imigrantes japoneses para o continente americano, e representa o início do processo imigratório. Havia uma identidade tipográfica nesses navios, cujos nomes eram pintados em um latim no estilo grotesco, sem serifa e em caixa alta, com uma leve geometria proveniente da ferramenta e da pintura manual.

LOWERCASE CAIXA-BAIXA

The lower case, diacritics, symbols, punctuations and numbers from the Nikkei Maru typeface were developed inspired by newspapers from Japanese immigrant communities in Peru, Brazil, Argentina and the United States. The geometric style that was often found in the newspapers at the time was good match with the upper case, which started the project because it represents the beginning of the immigration process.
A caixa baixa, diacríticos, símbolos, pontuações e números da tipografia Nikkei Maru foram desenvolvidos a partir da análise dos jornais das comunidades de imigrantes japoneses no Peru, Brasil, Argentina e Estados Unidos. O estilo geométrico que era frequentemente encontrado nesses jornais devido à época conferiu um bom pareamento com a caixa alta, que deu início ao projeto por representar os começo do processo imigratório.

The Nikkei Maru's dingbats represent the different experiences lived by Japanese immigrants in the American continent. The characters sourced two stylistic sets to generate patterns, inspired by the creation of patterns characteristic of Japanese typesetting and monyos (traditional Japanese patterns widely used in towels and kimonos), which are part of the visual culture of Nikkei.

Os dingbats da tipografia Nikkei Maru representam diferentes experiências vividas por imigrantes japoneses no continente americano. Esses caracteres dão origem a dois sets estilísticos para gerarem padrões, inspirados na criação de patterns característicos do typesetting japonês e nos monyos (padrões tradicionais japoneses muito utilizados em toalhas e em kimonos), que são parte da cultura visual dos nikkeis.

We believe that history is built collectively and also from personal accounts. Therefore, we would love to hear from you. The project may be updated based on future contributions and in the study of other countries that received immigrants on the American continent. We are interested in increasing the number of dingbats, patterns and languages supported as new reports emerge, so that more people and stories are contemplated.
The font development has ensured 294 glyphs to this present date, 7 stylistic sets and supports English, Spanish and Portuguese (languages spoken by Nikkei in the American continent). In the future, it may be extended to other weights or styles.
