House for The Poem of The Right Angle - 2010

By: Smiljan Radic
The house designed by Architect Smiljan Radic is located among the woodlands in Vilches, Chile. At the foothills of the Andes. Designed as ‘refuge’ and “a place for contemplation rather than viewing the landscape”. The abstract forms were inspired by one of Corbusier’s abstract paintings named ‘Flesh’ (image below). The painting was part of a series called ‘Poem of the Right Angle’. As a result the name ‘House for the Poem of the Right Angle’. The structure consists of 12 cm thick reinforced concrete walls painted black on the exterior, with 3 roof-lights, some harsh angles, a cantilever. Contrastingly, the interior walls and ceiling are lined in a warm cedar wood while the walls of the light-wells are painted white and faceted in a way that punctuates the space. The house has an open floor plan with an open roofed courtyard centrally placed (walled by glass) allowing natural light to penetrate all corners of the house.
