Poetry - Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll

sex, drugs, rock & roll
Several designers were approached to design a special edition book of poetry to be displayed in a exhibition. The poetry book needed typographically present each poem. In the initial meeting, the concept of musical lyrics as the constant poetry of the modern age. Subsequently, each designer picked a song lyric to illustrate.

I chose a lyric from the song "Dumb" by Kurt Cobain and set the classic font Futura. Type was set on an angle to mimic the uneasy feeling that is being expressed through the prose. The bleeding of type was used to evoke the image of weeping.

Each lyric in the book represented the cornerstones of sex, drugs or rock and roll in one form or another, which lead to a unifying theme of  the book. Once a name was established, I designed the cover. I wanted to express femininity in a tongue-in-cheek way. Influenced by Doyald Young's cartouches, I utilized Burgues Script by Ale Paul and Young Baroque by Doyald Young. The resulting cover became a logotype used to promote and further brand the presentation.
