Industrial Design
Ôbe

In a group of 4, we had 8 weeks to design and create a product that represented Montréal. We had to design a series of gift objects communicating a symbol of Montreal and later present the project to a jury from Code Souvenir Montreal. Our goal was to create an object that stands out with its clean, modern aesthetic while telling a story that allows the user to identify with Montreal.

FALL 2020
THE IDEA.
Let's Make Shovelling Enjoyable.
Shoveling in the morning of a winter storm is an activity rarely enjoyed, but inevitable for a Montrealer. The intention was to make this task a real pleasure. To do this, the team chose to design a sugar bowl with a spoon/shovel that allows the users to make the link between sparkling sugar and snow.

WHY ÔBE.
Ôbe stands for aube, meaning dawn in french. The half circle above the "O" represents the sunrise because this is when Montrealers will both shovel the freshly fallen snow or use the sugar bowl for their morning coffee.
SPOON
A Spoon That Looks Like a Shovel, If You Know About It.
This is probably the sentence we said the most during the whole project. We didn't want to simply do a miniature version of a shovel and turn this whole project into something cheesy. We wanted to follow the guidelines we set ourselves at the beginning and create an elegant object that makes the users smile once he understood the story behind it.

After trying out many wooden spoons, we decided that this wasn't the right way to go. It just didn't give the feeling we wanted to create with the spoon. We decided to completely switch to stainless steel wich gave the spoon a satisfying weight and a sense of class and cleanliness that we needed.
Plasma cut wasn't precise enough to offer a clean finish for the hole in the spoon's handle. To fix this problem, we decided to illustrate the concept of a shovel handle with a sandblast detail.

PACKAGING
A Packaging That Tells a Story.
Our goal was to allow the user to gradually discover the product he just bought. The sugar bowls sit at the bottom of the boxes to get to it, the users go trough a series of step that communicate the product's story and philosophy.
