[school assignment]
Brief: Create 6 Op Ed Illustrations for Michelle H Lim's "Lonely in lockdown? You’re not alone..." published on The Conversation
All illustrations were created with ink and paper.
I wanted to portray the life of living alone and how much chaos it brings especially to those who live alone.
Broken Soul - nothing shows brokeness more than a broken object, especially so a broken object that reflects a soul thats evidently broken as well.
centre: Grater - This was inspired by the last sentence of the opening paragraph saying "...for those who live alone, things are starting to grate."It inspired me to do a cheese grater scenerio, and I believe it showed a certain degree of pain.
The hand represents covid-19, the grater represents the pain it puts people through, and the human represents lonely people.

right: Window Sill - “1 in 2 Australians feel more lonely since coronavirus”. This one was to potray the fact that everyone was stuck at home, and that 1 in 2 were alone.
left: Dinner Alone - Growing up in a Chinese household, dinners were always full of joy and conversations. Ever since I moved to Melbourne alone, I felt that difference. And then even more so during the lockdown. Eating dinners alone often reminded me of how alone I was, and made that lack of company very prominent.
The opposite man is in a silhouette ink wash to show how the company is just a projection of her needs, but in reality shes alone.

centre: Seeking Comfort - On a bad day, all one could ever wish for was comfort and a big ol’ hug. For people who live alone, this was their wildest dream. This one was inspired by how on her bad days, she wished she had someone holding her.

right: Overwhelm - I believe overwhelm is a feeling accompanied by loneliness. This illustration is an extension of my own life - running errands alone and carrying heaps of heavy bags, only for it to suddenly pour.

Thank you for viewing! x
