Introduction

The Arts and Crafts Movement was started in 1862 by William Morris. In response to the negative social and aesthetic consequences of the Industrial Revolution, William Morris(along with other artists) created the movement to re-establish the importance of craftsmanship. The Arts and Crafts Movement primarily focused on architecture and the decorative arts such as wallpaper, textiles, printed fabrics, mosaic art, et cetera.(Arts and Crafts Movement: Origins, History, Aesthetics, n.d.)

Characteristics

The Arts and Crafts Movement is greatly influenced by nature. The designs usually consists of elegant swirls of vines, leaves and flowers that are symmetric. (Taggart, 2018)

In the example above (Figure 1), the influence of nature can clearly be seen. With these iconic characteristics you can easily identify an Arts and Crafts Movement design.
