Modular cubes, Letter Blocks

Children are being introduced to features of letters in an educational and playful way, such as repetition, mirroring and connections of characteristics. These letter cubes make children aware that a letter does not only consist out of positive forms. By providing an early introduction to letter construction, pre-schoolers gain guidance and preparation for reading and writing in the future. This preparation must be taken broadly, the making of connections and the distinction of letter forms. Also, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination are being trained.
Following key ideas are implied;
- Typographical awareness
- Letter construction
- Improving motor skill, hand-eye coordination
- Distinguish shapes and counter shapes
- Distinguish details, similarities and differences
Each side of the cube has different basic geometric shapes, when combining multiple cubes, it is possible to create each letter of the alphabet. There are various options for constructing a certain letter, as long as they generally resemble the original letter. Adults guide children through knowledge in which the child explores the typographical forms of letter properties. This could involve scaling a letter by using more or less modules, discussing the figure of a specific letter or discovering the recurrence of elements. It is important not to dictate designs, but allow the child to create, if a child wants to make something new, he must find a way to modify an existing design in stages to arrive at the new concept.
Alphabet knowledge is a key component in children’s early literacy development, yet relatively little toy options has aimed to introduce children on a young age with typographical preparation. Instructions and guidance are provided on the direction of a writing movement that is most ideal from a motoric point of view. One child’s development is faster than the other, but it is assumed that every child around the age of six is sufficiently motorized to be able to perform particular writing exercises. Motor skills are stimulated by providing a playful preparation of what the child will learn in primary school.
