젊은 디자이너에게...
뽑혀서 이 길에 들어서고, 언젠가 훗날 나의 손에 의한 디자인으로 인류의 환경을 꾸며 보겠다는 사명감에 불타있는 무명의 젊은이들에게 이 책을 바친다.
학교에 다니는 동안 자기의 길을 발견하려고 필사의 노력을 할 것이다. 그러나 학교라는 것은 학문을 가르쳐 주며, 또한 식견있는 사람들이 이루어 놓은 예술이라는 미지의 시계에 이르는 많은 길을 더듬어, 어떻게 노력하는가를 가르쳐 주는 정도에 그친다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.
예술에 이르는 길은 한없이 많으며 그 길이 진실이면, 그것으로써 훌륭한 것이다. 좁은 마음으로 세월을 보내느라면, 어느새 가장 중요한 우상에 돌림을 받아 홀로 공허하게 바닷가에 내동댕이처질 날이 올지도 모른다. 그것은 예술가는 모든 것을 믿지 않으면, 아무것도 믿지 않게 되는 까닭이다. 지금 여기 이 자리에서 믿는 것을 위해서는 죽음도 사양치 않는 각오를 하시오. 우상은 용감하게 불속에 던져 태우고, 이 시련을 거친 힘찬 본질이 남아있는 것만을 지키시오. 또 곧, 예술작품을 비교하여 우열을 가려내는 것이 부질없다는 것을 알게 될 것이다. 진실성이 있으며, 가장 소박한 것이 영원히 위대하다. 목표가 달성된 날이 왔을 때 자기는 고독하며, 자기를 판단하는 것은 자기뿐이라고 깨닫게 될 것이다.
그것은 환자의 죽음에 직면하는 의사의 두려움에 찬 입장이며 누구 한사람도 어떻게 하면 이 환자의 죽음을 막을 수 있을까, 처방이 적절한가를 가르쳐주지 않는다. 경험도 학식도 소용이 없으며 의지할 수 있는 것은 오직 자기의 직감뿐이다. 불안은 가져서는 안된다.
아무리 다듬어지지 않는 것이라 할 지라도 자기의 생각에 불안을 느껴서는 안되며, 아무리 힘든 것이라도 딴 사람의 생각을 두려워해서는 안된다.
불안은 좁은 생각을 품게 되는 큰 원인이며 참으로 관용한 인간은 아무것도 두려워하지 않는다. 그리고 예술은 절대 관대해야 한다.
당연한 결과이지만 대담하게 나가시오. 등산가는 몇 번씩이나 생명의 위험을 무릅쓴 후 비로서 정상에 이를 수 있다. 그리고 너무 많이 모험을 걸어서는 안된다.
광고나 잡지에서 눈을 돌리시오. 당신의 작품이 잡지를 만들어 낼 수 는 있으나 잡지는 작품을 만들어주지는 않으며 자신을 잃게 한다는 것을 마음에 간직하시오. 상업적이건, 사회적, 정치적, 종교적이거나 모든 것에 세뇌당하는 것을 피하시오.
...주의의 레텔을 자랑으로 붙이지 마시오.
이러한 테두리에 박히면 이웃의 목장에 아름다운 양이 있어도 눈에 띄지 않는다. 예술가라면 모든 사물을 주로 불가능한 것 마져도 믿지 않으면 안된다.
지금 시대에 불가능한 것처럼 생각되는 것이 다음 시대에는 당연한 것으로 되는 문제의 해결을 자기의 직관적인 통찰력으로 발견할 마음가짐을 잃어서는 안된다.
학위, 지위, 재산, 명예를 성공이라고 한다면 그 성공을 위해 노력해서는 안된다. 자연의 섭리는 결코 뒤엎을 수 없다. 봄에 열매를 맺을 과일이 가을에 꽃필 수 없으며, 씨앗이 자라 묘목으로 성장하기 전에 열매를 맺을 수 없다. 온실에서는 속성재배는 되지만 대지에 힘차게 뿌리 박은 것에 비할 수는 없다. 이 마음가짐으로 나가면, 만일 자기 작품의 완전함을 무엇보다도 바랄 때, 예스 보다는 노라고 할 경우가 훨씬 많을 것이다. 그러므로 그 예스야 말로 절대 참다운 것이다. 최악의 거짓말은 성공을 위해 자기에게 하는 별명의 거질말이다.
가끔 우상을 불태워라. 그리고 재출발을 하는 것이다.
예술이란 등허리에 자그마한 날개가 생겨, 그것이 자라 천사의 날개가 되고 아름다운 음악과 향그러운 내음으로 가득한 천국에 이르는 것 따위는 아니다. 날개가 자기의 몸을 공중에 날도록 해 줄 때 악마가 엿본다. 그 날개가 잘려, 몸은 높은 공중에서 떨어져 상처를 입게 될지도 모른다.
이처럼 오르고 떨어지고 되풀이하는 중에 예술의 경험을 쌓아 예술가로서 성장하게 된다. 때로는 어제의 애정과 오늘의 신념과의 모순을 느낄지도 모른다. 개성은 변하지 않으나 세계관은 달라진다.
놀라울만한 발견이 계속되는 인생의 여정에서, 오직 하나의 상 앞에 머리를 숙이는 것이 아니라 새로이 나타나는 모든 상 앞에 나의 마음을 기름지게 해 준것에 대해 감사하면서 기도를 들릴 것이다. 거장이 된듯한 태도로 규칙이나 초월하는 것은 될수있도록 많이 하시오. 조리법에 따르는 것은 풋내기 조리사이며 대가는 자기 스스로 만들어 낸다. 기억해야 했던 많은 규칙이나 관례는 새로 창조될 예술의 비전으로 바꿔져야만 한다.
마지막으로 예술가로서 일생을 통해 자기 기술의 달성을 목표로 하여 고생을 무릅쓴 습작과 훈련을 계속해야 한다. 디자이너에게 필요한 것은 결코 값비싼 것은 아니다. 손과 눈과 마음의 세가지가 기본적 용구이며 디자인 전쟁터에서 젊은 전사가 가지는 무기의 전부겠다.
기계적이든 딴 방법이든 지름길은 패배와 부적격의 증거이다.
예술은 최고의 신체운동이며, 베토벤, 파가니니, 하이펫츠, 피카소 등을 지향하는 자는 힘든 근육 노동자의 벗들이다. 기본원리나 음정, 화음 그리고 발성이나 스케치를 끊임없이 연습함으로써, 비로서 자기의 예술이 확립되어진다.
이것만이 참다운 것이다.

To a young designer
To you, anonymous hero knighted by the gods and entrusted by them to design the environment of mankind for the years to come, I dedicate this book.
In your years of school, you will desperately try to find your 'way". And your search will be desperate until some day you discover that a school can only teach you how to learn and how to work by opening your mind not to one way of knowledge, but to the many ways opened by men of vision into the unknown territories of art since it is true that there is an infinity of different ways to reach art, and that all are good, if they are authentic.
After your years of intolerance, you will find yourself some day left high and dry on a shore deserted of your dearest idols, with a bitter taste in your mouth. Because it is true that unless an artist believes in everything, he believes in nothing. Be ready to die for that you believe in today, but submit your idols to trial by fire, relentlessly, and keep only those which retain, through the ordeal, the original strength of their mettle.
You will also soon discover the vanity of saying of a work of art that it is greater than another work of art. You will realize that the humblest work may possess eternal greatness if it possesses sincerity.
When at length come your years of fulfillment you will find yourself alone, the only judge of your decisions, in the awesome position of the doctor at the deathbed of his dearest patient. No one then will tell you what can be done to bring life flowing again into what death is ready to snatch away. Even the experience and knowledge of your past years may be of no avail, as your only sure guide will always be your intuition.
Do not be afraid: either of your ideas, no matter how wild-or of the ideas of others, no matter how disturbing. Fear is the motive power of all intolerance, while no truly tolerant man can ever be afraid, and the artist must be uncompromisingly tolerant.
As a corollary to this, live dangerously. The mountain climber is only rewarded by the summit after having risked his life many times during the climb. Beware then of contracting too many insurances. Close your eyes to ads and magazines: don't ever forget that your work may make the magazines, but that the magazines will never make your work and may well destroy the faith you have in yourself.
Avoid brainwashing of any kind, commercial, social, political, religious. Don't let yourself be tagged by a leash of honour in "ism" that will make you one of the flock, but will blindfold you from seeing the beautiful lamb of the flock that happens to live on the next ranch. You, as an artist, must believe in everything, mostly in the impossible. Don't ever forget that by your intuitive foresight you will find solutions to problems that seem impossible today, but which will become commonplace in the next generation.
Don't work for success, whether success to you means a degree, a position, money, or honours. You cannot reverse the process of nature: sine no fruit in spring can produce flowers in the fall, you cannot visualize the harvest before the seed matures into a healthy, full-grown plant. A hot house may grow faster products, but none that can compete with the authentic product of the soil. This attitude will force you to give "no" for an answer more often than "yes", if you are concerned only with the integrity of your production. Then your "YES" will be uncompromisingly sincere. The worst lie is the lie you give to yourself as an excuse for success.
Burn your idols once in a while, and start all over again.
Art is not a process of feeling little wings grow in your back and grow and grow until they become angel wings and carry you smiling to a Heaven fragrant with sweet violin sounds and harps: when your wings start to lift you above ground, some good devil will know enough to clip them short, and you will fall and get hurt. Only through this succession of flights and falls will you experience art and grow in stature as an artist.
Often you will find your beliefs today in contradiction with yesterday's loves. Although your personality will never change, your vision of the world will. In your wonder trip of discovery through life, you will not rest in worship at the feet of only one idol, but will give to every new idol, as it passes by, a silent prayer of recognition as a thankful tribute to the enrichment it has brought to your mind.
Flout the riles as often as you can in a masterly way. Recipes are for poor cooks. Great chefs make them. The canvas of rules and codes that you have had to learn must be transgressed with vision for any art to be born.
Finally, during all your life as an artist, learn through painstaking experimentation, exercise, and practice, how to acquire a masterly knowledge of your craft.
As for your equipment as a designer, it is not costly: it will consist of your hands, your eyes, and your mind. These will be your most essential tools: they are all the arms you need as a young warrior in the battle of design. All shortcuts, mechanical and otherwise, are signs of defeat and ineptitude. Art is the highest form of athletics, and the greatest artists-a Beethoven, a Paganini, A Heifetz, or a Picasso-are among the most hard working "manual laborers".
Only through the constant practice of your grammar, your scales and arpeggios, vocalises and sketches, will you become articulate in your art.
