I started this project with a very rough pencil sketch, which I sent to the client. Once they approved the rough, I created a more detailed rough sketch, adding a few additional animals, and emphasizing the character expressions.

I then played with fonts by designing them by hand with watercolour, (I prefer the look of the slightly wonky hand drawn text) and using a lightbox I arranged the text to suit the pencil sketch. Once I was happy with the lettering, I scanned the watercolour text into Photoshop, where I flattened the colours.

I then drew over my pencil rough in Photoshop.
