Bantayog is a rough, display typeface based on the characters repainted over the worn-out, cast iron text about significant events in the past and the lives of prominent national figures narrated on Philippine historical markers.

Bantayog is the Filipino word for ‘monument,’ which are built to remind the present and future generations of the bravery and sacrifices the people before them have shown and given, and awaken the patriotism within each and everyone in honor of the memory of the heroes.

Every year, on the last Monday of August, the Philippines remembers its heroes through the public holiday ‘National Heroes' Day.’ Let's review their lives or learn more about them through this type specimen.

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (1861-1896) was a Filipino nationalist and polymath during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by profession, Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain.

Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro (1863-1897) was a Filipino revolutionary leader and the president of the Tagalog Republic. He is often called “The Father of the Philippine Revolution.” He was one of the founders and later Supremo (Supreme Leader) of the Katipunan, a movement which sought the independence of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule and started the Philippine Revolution.

Graciano López y Jaena (1856-1896) was a Filipino journalist, orator, reformist and national hero who is well known for his newspaper, La Solidaridad (The Solidarity), where social, cultural, and economic conditions of the colonial Philippines were published. Born in Jaro, Iloilo, he was instrumental in the Reform Movement that sparked the 1898 Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonization.

Martín Teófilo Delgado y Bermejo (1858-1918) was a Filipino military leader during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War, and was the first civilian governor of Iloilo Province during the American Colonial Era of the Philippines. He led the “Cry of Sta. Barbara” on November 17, 1898, the time the Philippine flag was raised for the first time outside Luzon where the revolution began, and established the revolutionary government in the Visayas.

María Josefa Gabriela Cariño de Silang was a Filipina revolutionary leader best known as the first female leader of an Ilocano movement for independence from Spain. She took over the reins of her husband Diego Silang's revolutionary movement after his assassination in 1763, leading the Ilocano rebel movement for four months before she was captured and executed by the colonial government of the Spanish East Indies.

Melchora Aquino de Ramos was a Filipina revolutionary who became known as "Tandang Sora" ("Elder Sora") because of her age during the Philippine Revolution. She operated a store in her town which became a refuge for the sick and wounded revolutionaries. She fed, gave medical attention to, and encouraged the revolutionaries with motherly advice and prayers.

This year 2020, a new breed of heroes have emerged. With PPE as armor, these workers have taken on the frontlines against COVID-19, risking their lives by reporting to duty to provide necessary goods, services, and care in this time of crisis. They only deserve is to be respected, listened to, and treated better. As we commemorate the likes of Rizal and Bonifacio this National Heroes' Day, let's not forget to give honor and express our gratitude to our frontliners for their sacrifices and invaluable service to the nation.
