Melting Ice Cream - Passing of Time - Week 2 - #oneperday2020

The theme ‘Passing of Time’, opens the #oneperday2020 challenge. The task for this week was to sketch one image through five stages of time. The chosen subject matter for the theme is an ice cream. Over a series of sequential images, it is evident and clearly visually communicated with the use of pencil materials that the object can be seen through five stages of change over time.

Melting Ice Cream:
The following 5 images demonstrate the physical change of a soft serve ice cream cone, over a reasonable amount of time, as it melts, and no longer in frozen form. In reflection given the chosen subject matter it is impossible to capture 5 stages of a melting ice cream over a period of 5 days. Alternatively, I filmed my subject matter and replayed the video to select appropriate measures of time where I discovered change. Doing so I then sketched those stages over a period of 5 days to complete week 1 of the #oneperday2020 challenge.
Day 1:
Material: HB Pencil, 2B Pencil, 4B Pencil, 6B Pencil, A4 110gsm paper
Techniques: Shading, Hatching, Cross Hatching
Process and Reflection: After observing the ice cream I drew a light outline finding the clear shapes within as a base. I then drew clear lines within the object outlining the surface of the shape, observed the lighter and darker areas of the object. Then using the technique hatching, beginning with the darker areas of the ice cream continuing to cross hatch to create depth and texture. Having used hatching before, this gave me the opportunity to further develop and grow more confidently with pencil tools. I was extremely happy with the result of the first image. The drawing itself showcases strong use of the hatching technique to show value and texture of the object.
Day 2:
Material: HB Pencil, 2B Pencil, 4B Pencil, 6B Pencil, A4 110gsm paper
Techniques: Shading, Hatching, Cross Hatching
Process and Reflection: Observing the subtle change in the ice cream I outlined the shape and followed the same process as day 1 using the cross hatching technique. With more confidence in the technique showed development but again was extremely happy with the result. Could however have considered more attention the shadow of the cone as it appears un-natural in comparison to the ice cream.
Day 3:
Material: HB Pencil, 2B Pencil, 4B Pencil, 6B Pencil, A4 110gsm paper
Techniques: Shading, Hatching, Cross Hatching
Process and Reflection: Again, observing the subtle change in the ice cream I outlined the shape and followed the same process as both day 1 and 2 using the cross hatching technique. By stage 3 the ice cream showed more of a transition to liquid form which involved more attention to the weight and chosen pencil material to showcase the texture.
Day 4:
Material: HB Pencil, 2B Pencil, 4B Pencil, 6B Pencil, A4 110gsm paper
Techniques: Shading, Hatching, Cross Hatching
Process and Reflection: Confidently continuing with the outlining of the ice-cream noticing the shapes, to then progress with the cross hatching technique to create depth and texture being sure to focus on weight and pencil tools to more effectively complete the darker areas of the object. Again, growing my confidence in sketching, however I could considered more attention to the cone as it appears un-natural in comparison to the ice cream.
Day 5:
Material: HB Pencil, 2B Pencil, 4B Pencil, 6B Pencil, A4 110gsm paper
Techniques: Shading, Hatching, Cross Hatching
Process and Reflection: Final day of sketching with pencil tools, I felt confident and developed my interest using the cross-hatching technique. Over the five stages I followed the consistent process of outlining the dominate shapes seen from the ice cream then continuing to create depth and texture with the hatching technique. By the fifth stage I felt overall confident including the cone which in previous sketches I was not so much.
