The Art Deco Movement

The Art Deco Movement
This art movement started across the field of visual arts such as architecture, paintings and sculpture to the graphic and also decorative arts. Art Deco practitioners were paying respects to modernist influences as Cubism, De Stijl and Futurism, the references were indirect, and it seemed as if they were taking the end results of a few decades of distilling compositions to the simplest forms and coming up with a new style that could be visually appealing but not mentally intimidating. The Art Deco style came from Paris, but influenced architecture as well as culture. Art Deco paintings are symmetrical, geometric, streamlined, most of the time simple and eye catching. This style is different to avant-grade art, which challenged people to see the message and the beauty in the untraditional images and forms (Glennon, 2016).
Art Deco Example
Woman with fish (1934) by Alexandra Exter (Esaulova, 2020)
This is an art piece by Alexandra Exter titled Woman with fish. This art piece was done in the style of Art Deco and the lady in the painting portrays a image of riches and the fish gives the impression of exclusive accessory and acting decently. The lady is wearing upper-class hat, gracious facial expressions, a slightly proud expression, the royal carriage, relaxed pose as well as the slim outline showcase the woman with fish. The lady doesn’t come across as overworked and instead a layer of worth and stands a shadow as if thrown over a smooth, rounded shoulder. The artist, Alexandra Exter portrayed a formal side of the woman with fish. This painting has a sense of being without a job. Natural in art deco this has smooth lines and echoes of cubism with a touch of a stylish woman pampered, relaxed. The use of the light and shadow and the colours that are overlaying follow the dictates of grace and make beautiful curves. The bending waist echoes the shadow and the horizon and the hats are perpendicular in the painting (Esaulova, 2020).
Modern Example
Art Deco in 2020 by wallauer
Art Deco was big in the 1920s and 1930s as the world of design started to be interested in a more stylish and multi-ethnic type of design, now many years later and it’s still integrated in today’s style but the interpretation of it has changed with the current 21st century styles showcasing an combination of its roots and a distinctively modern decorating feeling.  Art Deco as shown here is in the design of the wall coverings, rugs, upholstery, lighting fixtures, the design covering the tiles as well as the furniture. You can also see the materials used such as metallicas and elegant woods. These bold colours play a role with Art Deco, this serves a smooth, classy, modernized and clean image of Art Deco in modern time (Franklin, 2020).
