CPET as an O.M to Assess a Person’s Capacity for Work

Nonprofit organization United Charitable implements charitable vehicles such as donor advised funds and fiscally sponsored programs to allow donors and wealth advisors to enjoy effective philanthropic giving. Under a fiscally sponsored program, program managers can focus on their service, mission, and fundraising activities while United Charitable handles the legal bounds, management, finances, and administrative operations of program administration.

One charitable program working under fiscal sponsorship with the organization is the Workwell Foundation, which is staffed with exercise physiologists who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis and other fatigue-related illnesses.

Workwell uses cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to assess whether a person can function well in a structured work environment. Recognized by major medical organizations such as the American Heart Association and the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation as the gold standard in determining disability, CPET uses objective measures to assess a person’s capacity for work.

A typical CPET involves a patient pedaling for eight to 12 minutes on a stationary bike. While pedaling, the patient’s expired gases from his or her exhaled breathing are collected. This data is used to measure the patient’s oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, and pulmonary ventilation. The patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, and arterial oxygen saturation are also measured during the test through the attached blood pressure cuff, 12-lead ECG, and pulse oximeter.

CPET can provide information on the origin of aerobic impairment as well as unexplained shortness of breath for individuals with multiple chronic comorbidities.
