If Battle Royale is to be personified, I would say it was the love of my life. I am a devotee. Koshun Takami's masterpiece opened me to a world of pain and spite where survival paves the beauty within. I have read the novel, manga and seen the film many times I can imagine it vividly in my head. Sadly. the visuals incorporated with the story are always mature and vulgar; which is though thematic to its genre, is misleading since it automatically appeal to mature audiences.
Thus I created a character design for some of the prominent students of Shiroiwa Class 3-B. I took note that this was supposed to be a happy field trip turned into a mandatory bloodsport so I accentuated their youth by using vivid colors and conveyed each of their juvenile personalities through their fashion (which I took reference to the books and film). I wanted it to appeal to persons their age as this story is not only for mature audiences but it will open middle schoolers about the grim realities of the world and of those in power; and though as young as they may be, through a resilient and selfless mindset, they can help change the world in their own ways.
