Aurora Borealis Economy Class Seatback
designed with TrendWorks

This project was born from a panel discussion at 2019 Redcabin Aviation Summit focusing on how OEMs could help airlines innovate aircraft seating and interiors. Asked questions relating to the next generation of the passenger experience in economy class, the panel compiled a wish list of features. The dream economy class seat would include three tray variations, a "super widget" capable of informing the passenger of everything from cabin temperature and pressure, to lavatory availability, and even where a passenger's pet is in the cargo hold.
A drop-down media easel designed to hold and store personal electronic devices such as phones and tablets.
50/50 split traytable design- One for drinks, one for snacks, and both for workspace use. Revealed behind the traytables are a 3D knit multi-pocket pouch for inflight essentials or workspace organization.
Fabric covered AppBar module with light indicators and information for the passenger.
Key design sketch for selected concept.
PROTOTYPE
TrendWorks and I created the design and 3D model, as well as CMF design. We then collaborated closely with suppliers to craft fabrics, connectors, technology, thermoplastics, forming tools and molds, foam, and much more to build a quick turnaround prototype. From initial conversation to a full sized, fully functional seat prototype all were impressively completed in under six months.
Collaborating with AppLab to create a fabric covered light indicator bar.
"In response to the seatback prototype, Matthew Coder of Alaska Airlines said he was ‘overwhelmed,’ and stated to the audience that ‘collaboration is the accelerant of innovation.’"
