GROUPY
DISCOVERING MUSIC + COMMUNITY
. . .

For DesignLab's online Design 101 course, I was tasked with designing a mobile music player app for iOS.
THE PROJECT BRIEF
Create a mobile music player app with at least 3 screens for iOS over the course of 4 weeks.
THE PROBLEM
Other music player apps focus more on music discovery and rely on third-party apps to communicate nearby music events for users.
THE APPROACH
POV Statement
A young professional just moved to a new city needs to discover local music events in their area they'd likely enjoy because they're trying to meet people with similar interests and hopefully make friends in their new location.
How might we...?
How might we link music discovery and notification of local music events?
How might we make it easy to connect and stay connected with fellow music attendees?
How might we continually inform music discovery?
How might we update what is "local" to the user?
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Mood Board + Style Guide
A mood board was created to establish the overall tone of the app, resulting in a color palette reminiscent of concert lights and typography similar of retro rock albums. These and other design choices were then laid out in a style guide.
Logo
A logo was designed to encompass three main function of the Groupy app: music, community, and concerts. Inspiration was drawn from the mood board, resulting in an icon that simultaneously looked like a crowd at a concert and the symbol of volume.
Wireframes
Three different versions of wireframes were created, with the third combining elements of the first two, to experiment with different possible user interfaces.
High-Fidelity Designs
After some modifications and adjustments iterated on given feedback, the same wireframes were then turned into high-fidelity designs to gain a better understanding of the app's overall design.
THE SOLUTION
Music Player + Playlists
Groupy would have a music player in which users can stream music of their liking. Futhermore the music player would include a pane ("A-Sides") that, once opened, recommends three similar songs based on the one currently playing.

The app would also curate playlists based on a user's music tastes, location, and nearby concerts: "Pre-Show" (informed by a user's upcoming concert), "Set List" (informed by a user's most recent concert), "Post-Show" (informed by a user's concert history), and "Upcoming" (informed by a user's concert history and taste to determine what future concerts nearby they would enjoy).

Together these features would link music discovery and local music events, provide notification of future music events, and continually inform the music discovery.
Social Profiles + Messenger
Groupy would have its own social network ("Fanbase") in which users could follow one another, sample each other's music, and message each other. Each user, as well as bands and concert venues, would have their own social profile. However, users would only have the ability to message other users.

In addition to being able to chat, within the messenger page itself users would have a variety of sharing options and allow them to share songs, playlists, and concert information. Once a share is complete, it would send as a message and link to an appropriate page within the Groupy.

Together these features would make it easy to connect and stay connected with fellow music attendees.
