Cooperstown All Star Village's profile

Abner Doubleday and the Legendary Birth of Baseball

A versatile baseball resort, Cooperstown All Star Village features ample, comfortable lodging, as well as amenities ranging from restaurants and swimming pools to extensive baseball fields and facilities. All Star Village is located just outside of Cooperstown, New York, the birthplace of baseball.

According to legend, military prep school instructor Abner Doubleday single-handedly created the fundamental rules of baseball in Cooperstown during the summer of 1839 before going on to become a hero of the American Civil War. Former Major League baseball player, businessman, historian, and guidebook author Albert G. Spalding heard this story from mining engineer Abner Graves, and subsequently established a special commission to investigate its veracity.

In 1907, this commission determined that Abner Doubleday essentially formulated baseball, and named him the sole inventor of the sport. Although historians have since disputed these facts, the story lives on in lore and continues to enchant new generations of young baseball players.
