Biology Book - Visual Information System, Illustrations

This is a student project for my 3rd year in the National Academy of Art. The task was to create a biology book for the 7th grade -  prepare book design, illustrations, visual information system and infographics.
The concept was inspired by Petri dishes. Following the rules of the glass, its magnifying effects, its beauty and abstract shapes, I created a balanced, modern and fun visual information system. The logic behind it is simple - whatever is in the glass i.e. circle is "magnified" and has plenty of block colours (of course following the colour code for the section). Whatever is outside of the glass becomes linear and smaller.
The misplaced "patches" in the infographics and pictograms show the shift between two glasses when there is a substance between them.
Another rule I gave was to use the circle crop for anything that is of microscopic nature - fish scales, macro shots of feathers etc. Where ever was possible I also substituted colour with a greyscale to easy up on the colour "noise" that student biology books usually have.
Lastly I decided on a mixed media approach for the encyclopaedic illustrations using both aquarelle, colour pencils and my Ipad Pro.
The other illustrations and digital graphic elements for the book are left vector and simple.
The colour codes help children navigate more freely and instinctively through the book. This also helps strengthen their visual memory.
