Build it, and they will come
Urban stimulus on the river front in Rochester
In 1995 the City of Rochester created an urban stimulusprogram and selected The DeWolff Partnership in conjunction with a Rossetti Architectsto redesign and expand the Rochester War Memorial. Seeking to reinvigorate thedowntown area by bringing people in for sporting events, concerts and (yes)monster truck shows, the new arena had to be designed to meet hefty and diverseprogrammatic requirements. 15,000 new seats and 21 sky boxes doubled thecapacity of the existing structure, 20 foot loading doors gets he monstertrucks in without a scratch, and a glass front atrium glows at night like awelcome beacon in downtown Rochester.
Through the late 90s and early 2000s, downtown Rochester sawand increase in development spurred by the success of the arena, mostly due tothe added attendance and enticing draw for big ticket events.
The previous Rochester War Memorial, better suited as a mausoleum than an exciting sports venue.
