Game Art [AUG 2020]
Module Progress Documentation
Welcome to the page that hold my progress of attempting and learning game art. This record will go through the exercises and projects done from April 2020 till Aug 2020.

Exercises - Initial Game Research and Moodboard
The first thing we were tasked with was an exercise that involves brain storming on a concept for a game we wanted to revamp/remaster/create the art for. We were tasked with finding some existing games for reference of the art styles and create a moodboard for how we wanted it to be.
Below is my Art Direction Proposal
Project 1 - Rough Concept
After deciding on the genre of game, target audience, platform, and style, we were to begin concepting the artwork for characters and environment. I decided to revamp one of the game I avoid playing due to not liking the art style when it was launched and the game is called "Braid" developed by Number None. Initially I thought I had to redesign the style of the character and not change the concept of the character and I was stuck on the same spot for quite some time, below you can see my struggle of trying to change an art style of an existing character.
Characters
Every time I showed my work to my lecturer during consultation always resulted in getting lectured about my work being not up to the quality and feels like I did not put any effort in it because I did not provide acceptable and unique options for the concept sketches. However that was not the case, instead I got the wrong direction and did not double check the brief. After that, I have personally message my close friend and my lecturer to ask for advice and they've helped me to understand the objective and approach and so I've sketched more options.
Then, I have to pick 5 out of 10 for each and then select 3 out of them and finally the final one.
Environment
For world concept and environment design I was in the same spot as my character progress, was struggling with ideas until nearing the deadline for project 1 then I began to have some concept ideas and I've thumbnailed it out.
The initial thumbnail was bad and I got lectured as well as given helpful tips and advice from my lecturer.
Here is the amendment and options.
Below is the full PDF compilation of Project 1.
Project 2  - Asset Refinement
For Project 2, we have to refine and break down the elements like clothing and props for the character as well as the environments. I found myself shifting towards inconsistency of art style when it comes to different characters.
I tend to add too much texture overlays on top of my illustrations and each character has different types of shadings like soft, rough and hard edges. Subsequently my lecturer noted that some of my props are too straight and rigid especially the wooden log weapon for the boss, it looked too straight and  perfect, he advice me to explore on organic shapes.
Project 3 - Art Bible Compilation
The final project we had to do consisted of compiling all that we created art bible style in an A3 format. Below is the final compilation.
In the end, I found this module helped me to push myself to complete works even suffering from major burnt out that was really in the way from letting me complete my work with the goal in my mind. I feel like I've only achieved 70% of what I initially wanted to achieve I wanted to polish my illustrations more and even attempt 3D for either the environment or a "collector item figure" of the main character. But in the end, I am glad that I manage to complete the work.
