City and Representation
In this project we had to find a way of negotiating the difficulty of representing other cultures. Tourist photographers capture the exotic and attempt to bring it home and we were to examine the cultural assumptions underpinning this practice.
When I went to Florence I was concerned by the level of tourism and found it easy to forget that whilst this is also a holiday destination it is also the homes of local people whose identity is lost under a wave of visitors. The graffiti punctuating the city was one of the few ways I felt I was able to represent the local people without the influence of tourism. The images were shot on a Bronica ETRSi on negative film.
