This project is the result of my Master's thesis research, exploring the visual similarities between Chinese and Mexican cultures.
One of the predominant features of Mexican folk graphics is the lettering. Basically, these kind of signs can be seen on the walls and glass of grocery stores, laundries, restaurants, etc. Mainly hand-painted by artists, there are many ways of expression: the use of a variety of colors, perspective, three-dimensional, textures and shades.
Rotulos Typography Exploration explores the resources that visual design from both China and Mexico can provide when combined. This Experimentation absorbs visual language of two countries and develops a new hybrid that offers the possibility to communicate the same visual idea in two different places, with the same design. All of it is achieved without losing the identity of where the design comes from. Design is a manifestation of culture, expression of values, symbols and attributes, this is the key to produce visual content that represents our environment and time.
