Refresh is an ongoing project that revolves around designing a recipe book aimed at individuals who suffer from Hashimoto's disease.
The client, who suffers from Hashimoto's had treated herself through a process called 'metabolic balance' and wanted to share how she managed to lose weight, improve her health, and feel better about herself.
She wanted to devise a number of recipes using specific ingredients that are beneficial to balancing metabolism and create a meal plan for the reader to follow over the course of a couple of weeks.
-Create a striking cover page and title.
-Create a layout template for all pages.
-Take photographs of all recipes.
Cover and Title
The first step was to design a front cover and come up with a striking title. As Hashimoto's disease affects the thyroid gland of the body, I had the idea of somehow trying to incorporate that into the design of the front cover.
After a bit of research online, I discovered that the shape of the thyroid gland has been known to resemble a butterfly and I very much liked this concept. I wanted to translate that into the cover page and so started to look online and brainstorm as to how I could take that idea and make it into a cover page for a recipe book.
After a bit of tinkering around, I settled on the idea of forming a butterfly using the ingredients in the cookbook.
This allowed the metaphor of a newly born butterfly to represent a newly born reader after they had read the book and tried the recipes. Thus, the book's title of 'Refresh' was born.
Upon the creation of a number of recipes, it was important that the layout of the pages was decided first. This included font type, font size, layout and size of images, location of text, colour palette, and so on. I took a number of test photographs and had a play around on InDesign to visualize this.
I then started to experiment with fonts, shapes, patterns, and layouts to determine how much space was available and the eventual design of each page.
With a layout idea in mind, I started designing the backdrop for each photograph, taking the photograph, and creating the templates for each page.
Refresh is still a work in progress, but the client's plans are to publish the book on Amazon when it is completed.
