In 2010, on a press trip, I took my old Nikon along on to Auschwitz-Birkenau - the most infamous of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps during the holocaust. 1.3 million died here. The concentration camp buildings were vast impersonal blocks where workers were crushed by the brutal labour regimes. Across the road was the death camp - most of those buildings were damaged by Nazis trying to remove all traces of their endeavours. The empty ruins spoke of a suffering which was hard for me to imagine.
