Ropler

Ropler is a ruler designed to be capable of measuring any distance in 3D dimension space. It combines the function of a common ruler and a tape measure, which provides user a new using experience and better workflow.

● The pointer will move as you pull out the rope. The length of the rope you pulled out will be the number the pointer points.

● To shorten the length of the rope, just push the pointer back to the place you prefer.

● Measuring length of curves is not a thing anymore, you can easily achieve the goal by using the rope.
● Want to know the perimeter of a camera lens in 3 seconds? Pull out the rope and measure like a boss.
● Ropler provides user an additional function of drawing circles. The radius can be up to 29.7cm.

Design process

There are already thousand kinds of stationeries exist, what can be different from the old ones? What are the possibilities of stationeries?

First, we made a list of various kinds of stationeries, then we put them into different kinds of categories which correspond to the essence functionality of each of them. This helped us to clarify what each stationery do and what is the most important element of each.
Next, we tried to compound a new type of tool by combining two or three of them, by using this method, we could quickly come up with some interesting ideas.
We then made a list of combinations which we thought interesting. Though not all of the combinations were good ideas, there were still some good ones that were worth exploring.
Finally, we decided to focus on "measuring tools", and we wondered what is the most powerful tool to measure a length? So we tried to develop a kind of tool that could measure any length in 3D dimension, including 2D or 3D curves, and also maintain the function of whatever a ruler has.

After doing some sketches, we had roughly decided the way it works and how it looks. But 2D world is still far away from 3D, and sometimes the perfect look in 2D may just be another perspective of an awkward 3D object, so we modeled our sketch in 3D software to take a look from different angles, and also make sure the shape is feasible to produce.
