Thesis Project "The Invisible Yacht" Azimut Enigma

Exploration of possible futures depends upon us imagining new solutions through research  of the past, as well as the present. Carrying on the tradition of excellence of Azimut, a brand partner that translates the essence of Made in Italy into an everchanging form, the designers must develop a new invisible yacht. Reworking the new Azimut style proposed by Alberto Mancini on the new S10, S8 and 78'f models, the design must propose a 25 meter yacht of the future, capable of merging with the environment. Considering design, external geometries, luminous identity of the concept at night and materials, both exterior and interior design must guarantee a yacht that is able to blend into the nature and reduce the environmental impact; a yacht that is inspirational for those who love the sea.

Environmental Invisibility First one of the four ‘principles of invisibility’ explored throughout this project is environmental invisibility. Above all, this means making the environmental footprint of the yacht invisible. This calls for the usage of cutting edge sustainable solutions wherever possible. Besides reduced emissions and improved fuel economy, hybrid propulsion technologies offer the added benefit of extended range. An adventurous owner will see their yacht become invisible as they journey beyond the reach of other people.

Harmonic Invisibility "Camouflage" is not the only way to render on object invisible. A more challenging yet much more meaningful solution is creating a structure that blends with it’s environment on a more subtle, harmonic level. A structure composed in this manner does not try to imitate it’s surroundings, but achieves an elegant symbiosis with it.

Technological Invisibility The most concrete of the 4 fundamental concepts is technological invisibility. The idea that we can use existing technologies to reduce the visual footprint of the yacht. These technologies include the likes of glass and lighting. Cutting edge composite materials help create slender yet strong architecture that keeps the bulk of the structure at minimum.

Social Invisibility Invisible yacht is the ultimate manifestation of privacy. However the concept of invisibility -hiding from the world- is inherently solitary. It was therefore important to craft the social areas of the yacht to overcome the sensation of isolation. By the virtue of groundbreaking rearrangement of the onboard spaces, the owner and guests are brought together as they share the Enigma experience.
