Benjy Orbach's profile

Little League - An International Youth Sport

An experienced operations executive, Benjy Orbach has worked in sales and management positions across a range of industries focused on retail, importing, and real estate. The Methuen, Massachusetts resident is also an avid sportsman who enjoys baseball, football, horseback riding, wilderness camping, and other outdoor pursuits. In addition, Benjy Orbach counts his experiences guiding Little League teams, as both manager and coach, among his favorite volunteer activities.

Now a truly international organization, Little League baseball was founded in 1939 by Carl Stotz of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, assisted by brothers George and Bert Bebble. Stotz worked in a lumberyard, and wanted to create a way for boys (girls were admitted in the 1970s) to have fun while building character and an ethic of loyalty and teamwork. The Little League pledge reflecting these values has remained unchanged since its first use in 1954.

Little League really took off after World War II, with dozens of teams in existence by 1947.

Stotz became the league’s first commissioner, and he and the Bebble brothers served as its first managers. They oversaw the first nationwide Little League tournament in 1949, held then, as now, in Williamsport.

Over the years, Little League has grown and expanded, starting, for example, a Challenger division for youth with physical and developmental disabilities in 1990.

Today, some 2.5 million players around the world participate in Little League games. In the 2019 Little League World Series, the Eastbank team from River Ridge, Louisiana, won the championship title over the Pabao team from Curacao.
