The Cucumber Lounge
Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel “Vineland” is set in the 1980’s Northern California. Taking place on a miasma of deception, dope, g-men, and conspiracy, the novel oozes personality and strange details.
Yee Haw!
This piece is part of a series where I give an identity to some of places, people, and things, Pynchon describes in such vivid detail. The Cucumber Lounge is a old ranch bar in the heart Vineland. It opens onto old redwood trees, and serves cheap bourbon to the rugged and weathered souls working on the souring farms and ranches.
