WATER RESEARCH CENTER/Graduation Project

WATER RESEARCH CENTER AND FILTERATION
Graduation project
Class of 2019
Thesis Statement:
Recognizing the damages that are caused by contaminated water and the fast growing demand for potable water in Iraq and the whole world’s a good start that leads to provide solutions including filtering and researching projects using high quality processes to meet the needs.
The Concept: Design concept is derived from the First Water Filtering System founded by the Scottish engineer (John Gibb), the system was consisted of Four main layers derives from earth materials where the water enters from one side holding contaminants and get filtered step by step to come out as potable water from the other side.
I reflected this method on the form design by creating Four masses linked to gather with a curvilinear mass representing the water element inside the filtering system and used the Vorronoi pattern on the elevations as an abstraction of the chemical relations between H2O molecules.

MAIN SHOT (BIRD EYE VIEW)
The Challenges:
Basically there are two main challenges, the first is that water pollution and the demand for potable water is becoming one of the biggest crisis in Iraq and is increasing in the recent times, some decisions of neighboring countries as well as environmental issues in Iraq caused significant problems for areas adjacent to the tributaries, especially the Little Zab which is suffering from increasing pollution and contaminants in its water, causing scarcity in potable water for the surrounding areas such as (qala dze, altun kopry, dibis, &some Kirkuk’s districts).
The second challenge to face is lack of people’s awareness regarding the impact of contaminated water on their health as well as on the survival of animals and plants dependent on the river water.
FORM ANALYSIS
The Solutions:
The project provides solutions by containing:
Water Filtering: Represents a key part of this projects that consists of several consecutive stages through which water passes and gradually is filtered, using new water filtering technology.
Research center: A group of buildings established for the purpose of researching, studying and discovering data that has to water issues through applying new techniques. Providing a suitable environment for Iraqi and foreign scientists to conduct researches.
The beneficiaries of this project include (The ministry of water resources, the ministry of health, the community, the students of similar disciplines, and Flora and Fauna).

The Techniques:
The traditional techniques that are still used in similar projects require large areas and high maintenance cost on the long term, to avoid those negative aspects I chose the Reverse Osmosis System (RO) which requires less area, less maintenance cost, and causes almost no sound and vibration, making it more economic and efficient.
