Personal Statement:

“If you can design one thing, you can design everything” - Massimo Vignelli. As a designer and artist, I believe that art and design works did not stop at just creating something new. We also can look at the past, the present, the future and create artworks. Influences are everywhere and at any time so that why I want to create my typeface which connects with the past and the present to create the future.
In order to make my typeface come to life, I have gone everywhere from the graffiti in the street to the broader culture explorations, like the antique decoration represents the national identity. At first, what I am focusing on is the architecture and the 3D model which can be related to the decisions of my own typeface. But then, I changed my mind after two other field trips to the Vietnam National Museum of History and Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, I started to focus onto the lines, shapes, the patterns and the “Nôm” writing found in ancient hand crafts of Vietnam more and more. That is a really clear proof of the typography appearance since the early day and have an important role in the people of Vietnam’s long time ago.
We are now living in the 21st century - a century that is known for its technological and digital. The more I get know typography the more decisive thing I realise how typography was represented in the past and able to connect the present and the future. As Vietnam still continues to developmental, I believe that as contemporary designers, we still could reach and keep our own culture in every design as a way to show the national identity like our project name “Thuần.”
This is the Mock-up which is applying my "Sóng" Typeface.
This is a short video of the creating "Sóng" process.
