Abstract Utopia SS '12 Collection

PRESS RELEASE:

Simple yet beautifly structured shapes emanates Monika Selecka's conceptual ABSTRACT UTOPIA S/S 12 COLLECTION, which clearly reflects on modern art and architecture.
By applying the principles of light, shadow, reflection , refraction, projection of colour and transparency whilst keeping a close relationship wiht the human bodyand a direct interaction with the viewer, she manages to create a deeply enganging sensory experience and illusion. A constant diversity embodies the collection by suggesting a change of the shape, texture or colour within the same garment. Minimalistic tones of grey and clean symetrical lines contrast the use of soft shades of blues, pinks and yellowsin the playful lighting of the projection, at times interrupted by the sharpness of reflection and refraction from within the garment.

My FASHION FILM:

My inspiration comes from modern urban architecture. Looking at symmetrical visual lines and the strong angular shapes combined with the play of light and shadow, exploring this along with reflection and refraction to create optical illusion.
In support of my initial conceptual research I have visited 2 installation exhibitions, which has informed my interpretations of the subject matter.
The artist Richard Wilson uses reflection as a medium to create a mesmerizing experience of the architectural space. He plays with the mind’s perception of reality by confusing physical logic. The exhibition 20:50 takes its name from recycled engine oil with a highly reflective surface appealing as a holographic field. This is informing my ideas for texture and shape.
In the second exhibition Josiah McElheny presents the artist’s formal and conceptual investigation of reflection by using mirrors and projection as an art medium that also includes the viewer. Seven large-scale mirrored sculptures are arranged as multiple reflective screens on which he projects recon

‘If  “the reflective” can be described as a medium, it is one in which the
viewer becomes the author, because without the viewer it is impossible to discern the something, or even the        nothing, that is there.’'
